Big inning leads softball to split with Bloomsburg

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to pull out a 4-2 win over visiting Bloomsburg to earn a split Monday. The Huskies notched an 8-0 five-inning win in game one.

Trailing 1-0 in the last of the sixth, Philadelphia (16-21) put its first two batters of the inning on base. Madison Heno (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), pinch running for Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), and Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) pulled off a double steal to put themselves into scoring position.

Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenxville Area) tied the score as she lined a single into left field, plating Heno for the tying run. On the same play, Bliss wandered away from first base and forced pitcher Alyssa Davies to throw to second and keep Bliss at first. However, Davies airmailed the throw into center field, allowing Wensel to slide home for the go-ahead run.

Later in the inning, Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) roped a one-out single to left to bring two more runs home to widen the lead to 4-1.

The Huskies (21-12) scored their second run on a two-out double off the bat of Emily Mayhew.

Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) earned the victory in relief for Philadelphia. She struck out seven Huskies while allowing one run on two hits in four innings.

Led by two-hit games from Weaver and Bliss, Philadelphia outhit Bloomsburg 7-4.

Anna McElroy brought home Bloomsburg's first run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

In game one, the Rams managed only one hit off of Bloomsburg hurler Taylor Parker, who recorded seven strikeouts in the five-inning contest. Wensel broke up Parker's no-hit attempt with a leadoff double to begin the fifth.

After being kept off the scoreboard in the first inning, the Huskies scored three runs in the second and third innings, and two in the fourth.

Maggie Hall and McElroy worked bases loaded walks and Taylor Winkelman had an infield single in the second inning. One inning later, Erin Smith recorded a RBI single and Maggie Hall drilled a two-run home run. Bloomsburg scored on a Julia Knight single and a Holly Peacock groundout in the fourth.

Philadelphia heads to Nyack for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
