Lady Rams Drop Rematch at Bloomfield

Sophomore forward Kate Brennan (pictured) scored 20 points and sophomore center Jessica Romano poured in 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it was not enough to prevent a 64-57 defeat at Bloomfield College.

It was Philadelphia University's second loss on the season against the Deacons, following an 80-70 decision back on December 6, 2007 at the Gallagher Center in a game that did not count towards the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) standings.  This game was a league affair, and Head Coach Tom Shirley's Lady Rams now stand at 1-3 in CACC play (6th place in the South Division), and 6-5 overall.  The Deacons improved to 7-5 with the victory, and they lead the North Division with a 4-1 mark in conference action.

In a near replay of the opening moments of their previous game at home against Kutztown back on December 29th, tonight's contest opened with the Lady Rams scoring the first six points before Bloomfield went on a 7-0 run of their own to take their first lead.  The rest of the half proved a see-saw affair with the teams exchanging the lead nine times and knotting the score thrice.  The Lady Rams held their largest lead of the night at eight points when junior guard Amanda Brennan canned a three-point basket with 9:20 left in the opening period to give Philadelphia a 24-16 advantage.  But the Deacons countered over the remaining portion of the half and the opening frame ended with the two teams tied at 32-32.

Kate Brennan opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer and the Lady Rams would lead deep into the contest, but the Deacons tied the score 49-49 with 6:18 left in the game and pulled ahead :20 seconds later after two made free throws.  The Lady Rams would struggle from the field the rest of the way, and Bloomfield went on to secure the home win.

In addition to Romano and Kate Brennan, Amanda Brennan finished with 12 points and six rebounds and senior forward Ashley Webster had six points and eight rebounds.  Bloomfield had two players who notched double-double figures, freshman center Tiffany McDaniel (16 points and 10 rebounds) and senior forward Marissa Franklin (14 points and 10 rebounds).  Junior guard Ashley Crenshaw also scored 14 points in the winning effort for the Deacons.

For a second straight game, Philadelphia University shot less than one-third from the floor (18-60, .300), a trend they hope to reverse this Wednesday, January 9th at the Gallagher Center in their next game, a non-conference encounter with West Chester University.
