Brascetta and Frye Named Lady Rams' Captains for 2008-'09 Season

Rising senior combination guard Shaleta Frye (Hillside, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) and rising junior point guard Nina Brascetta (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) have been voted by their Lady Rams' teammates as co-captains for the 2008-'09 women's basketball season that begins in the fall.
Frye becomes the first walk-on player to succeed to captain under Head Coach Tom Shirley. "Sha is a great ball-handler and perimeter defender. She has a good anticipation, a great feel for the quick pace of the game and she'll beat her opponents off the dribble. Walking on to a varsity team at the collegiate level is not easy, but Sha's work ethic and dedication to the team have resulted in her ascension to a leadership role," said Shirley, who will enter his 20th season at the helm of the Philadelphia University program in the autumn. Joining the head coach for his 20th season himself with the team is assistant coach Paul Stadelberger, as well as his fellow assistants, Jim Munn, and former Lady Ram standout Melissa (Kelly) Storm '02.
Brascetta started in 19 of the Lady Rams' 29 games in the 2007-'08 season as a sophomore. She averaged 4.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest, leading the squad with 82 total assists as the team went 19-10 on the year. "Nina is a true-blue point guard in that she thinks pass first and score second," said Shirley, who added, "She was challenged at the point guard position last year and she dug in deep and provided us with quality minutes whether starting or off the bench. Her hard work on and off the court have made our program stronger and I think she'll relish and flourish in her position as a team captain."
Overall, the Lady Rams return 12 of 13 players from last season, and are expected to add three incoming freshmen to the roster, namely Christine Wooding from Mainland High School in New Jersey; along with Taylor Peltzer from Archbishop Wood and Deanna Kelly from Archbishop Carroll, both of whom competed in the prestigious Philadelphia Catholic League.
The team will begin formal training on October 15, 2008 in anticipation of the regular season, which is scheduled to begin on November 15 vs. New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) at the Gallagher Center at 2:00 p.m.
