Reserve Magnus Lifts Lady Rams Over Chestnut Hill
Freshman forward Taylor Magnus (Plymouth
Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a career-high 16 points,
hitting six of eight field goal attempts, helping Philadelphia
University to a 68-56 win over Chestnut Hill College in
women's basketball action on Tuesday night at the Gallagher
Center. Magnus, whose previous career-best was seven points
against West Chester University last week, also added three
rebounds and two steals for the Lady Rams, who improve to 8-5
overall with the win and 2-3 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference.
Senior forward Ashley Webster (Philadelphia,
Pa./Cheltenham; pictured getting an assist from Taylor Magnus)
added 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Lady Rams and
needs just 27 points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau for her
career. Moreover, Webster is now just 12 boards shy of
fifth-place among the University's all-time leaders in
rebounding, surpassing former Lady Ram great Samara Speakes
'05.
Griffins' sophomore forward Jenna Beck
(Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) led all scorers with 17 points to
go along with nine rebounds in the setback while senior forward
Tara Walsh (Woodbine, N.J./Wildwood Catholic)
finished with a double-double, totaling 14 points and ten
rebounds.
The two teams traded baskets for the opening ten minutes of action
before the Lady Rams put together a 10-0, capped by a Magnus
jumper, to take a 23-15 lead with 7:00 remaining in the first
half. The lead swelled to 15 points at 34-19 on a three-point
field goal from junior guard Amanda Brennan
(Stratford, N.J./Sterling) with just over a minute remaining and
Head Coach Tom Shirley's squad settled for a 36-22
halftime margin.
In the second half, the Griffins (2-11, 0-5) battled back, pulling
within six points at 38-32, fueled by a 10-0 run of their
own. Highlighting the stretch was Beck, who scored five of
the ten points including a three-point play with 16:06 that capped
the run. However, the Lady Rams proved too much, responding
with an 8-0 run that all, but sealed the game.
Up next for Philadelphia University is another CACC South
Division matchup, at Georgian Court University on Thursday,
January 17th. Tip-off versus the Lions is slated for 7:00
p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
