Freshman Gaskins' Last-Second Basket Leads Lady Rams to Road Win

Freshman forward Ashley Gaskins grabbed an
offensive rebound and scored on a putback with 1.5 seconds
remaining, leading Philadelphia University to a 74-73 win at East Stroudsburg University on
Wednesday, November 28th, in women's basketball action. The
win improves the Lady Rams to 3-1 overall on the season while the
Warriors fall to 0-3.
In the opening frame, Head Coach Tom Shirley's
squad jumped out to an early 21-9 advantage behind the scoring of
sisters Kate Brennan and Amanda
Brennan. Kate, a redshirt freshman, scored 11 during
the opening run while Amanda, a junior guard, added seven.
East Stroudsburg battled back with an 8-0 run of their own to close
the gap, but the Lady Rams held a 43-33 advantage at the half.
In the second half, Shirley's team maintained the lead for the
first 18:01, holding a 66-59 advantage with just over six minutes
remaining in regulation. However, the Warriors put together
one last run, tying the contest with 1:09 left and eventually
taking the lead, 73-72, on a pair of Monika
Fogelsanger free throws with 12 seconds left.
Following a timeout, Amanda Brennan drove the baseline for the Lady
Rams, missing a layup attempt while senior Ashley
Webster grabbed an offensive rebound, but also
missed. Gaskins then gathered the loose ball and scored the
eventual game-winning basket, helping Philadelphia University
avenge a loss to the Warriors last season. East Stroudsburg
still had 1.5 seconds left on the clock, but was unable to get off
a shot against the Lady Rams' pressure defense.
Kate Brennan led all scorers with 23 points while Webster added her
third double-double in four games this season, finishing with 17
points and 11 boards. Sophomore center Jessica
Romano also collected a double-double, adding 15 points
and 13 rebounds before fouling out with 1:59 remaining.
