Hot Outside Shooting Keys Lady Rams' CACC Victory Over Devils

Junior guard Amanda Brennan (Stratford, N.J./Sterling; pictured) led a balanced Philadelphia University offensive attack with 19 points, helping the Lady Rams to a 71-62 win over visiting University of the Sciences in women's basketball action on Thursday night at the Gallagher Center. Brennan fired at a 50% clip (5-10) from three-point land as the Lady Rams combined to shoot a blistering 57.1% (8-14) overall from beyond-the-arc. And not to be outdone by her older sister, redshirt-freshman forward Kate Brennan (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) was 3-3 (100%) from long range, finishing with 11 total points to go along with four rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
The victory garners Head Coach Tom Shirley his 550th career victory as his team improves to 13-7 overall including a 6-5 record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The key CACC South Division victory allows the Lady Rams to remain in the hunt for conference tournament seeding, as Philadelphia University, Wilmington University, Goldey-Beacom College and USP themselves battle down the stretch for the three postseason berths behind league and region-leading Holy Family University.
Senior forward Ashley Webster (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham) contributed 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Philadelphia University with sophomore center Jessica Romano (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finishing with a double-double, collecting 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Devils (10-11, 7-5) were led by junior forward/center Allison Weiss (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) with 19 points and 18 rebounds with freshman guard Caitlin Shaw (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) adding 13 points.
The Lady Rams rapidly gained command of tonight's game, bursting to a 12-2 lead when Webster stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a fast break layup at the 15:21 mark of the opening stanza. The Devils fought back and midway through the first period the Philadelphia lead was trimmed to three as the score was 18-15 with 10:16 remaining. But the Lady Rams closed the half on a 23-13 run to take a 41-28 lead into the locker room at the break.
The closest that the visiting Devils would get in the second half was when the score was 61-53 with 7:27 to go in the game, but the Lady Rams were never threatened as they shot 46.9% (30-64) from the field on the night while the Devils connected at a rate of just 37.3% (25-67).
Coach Shirley's squad continues their stretch drive this Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Gallagher Center as they host cross-town rival Holy Family University. Philadelphia will attempt to avenge a 71-48 loss to the Tigers from Dec. 3, 2007 in the CACC South Division opener for the Lady Rams. Holy Family is currently ranked #1 in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region, and nationally the Tigers are #7 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 WBCA Coaches Poll.
