Wildcats' Second-Half Surge Too Much for Lady Rams

Sophomore center Jessica Romano (pictured) registered a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds for Philadelphia University, but it wasn't enough to prevent an 83-71 loss to visiting Wilmington University in women's basketball action on Friday night at the Gallagher Center.  The loss drops the Lady Rams to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) while the Wildcats improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Junior guard Amanda Brennan also scored 18 points for Philadelphia University in a losing effort, including five three-point field goals.  Senior forward Ashley Webster had 10 points and 10 boards for her fifth double-double in nine starts on the seson.

Sophomore guard Kim Parker poured in a game-high 19 points to lead a balanced Wilmington University offensive attack with sophomore forward Amelia Simmons adding 18 points.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the score 35-34 in favor of the visiting Wildcats, 10 of those points coming off of Philadelphia turnovers, as the Lady Rams gave the ball to the Wildcats 11 times in the first half, while forcing just five Wilmington miscues.

In the first four minutes of the second period, the Wildcats outscored the Lady Rams 18-7.  This key run provided Wilmington the first double-digit margin for either team in the game.  The final basket of this early second-half rally was a three-point field goal by senior guard Sherrelle Holmes at the 15:55 mark that put the visitors up by 12.  Holmes would place her mark all over the box score by game's end, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.  She was a perfect 6-6 (100%) from the free-throw line, all of them coming in the final ninety seconds when the Wildcats sealed their second conference win of the year.

The Lady Rams did stage a comeback midway through the closing frame, cutting the Wilmington lead to three points after freshman guard Stephanie Agger sank a jumper with 10:21 remaining to make the score 55-52 in favor of the Wildcats.  But junior forward Jillian Bennett responded with a field goal on the ensuing possession and Wilmington never looked back.  Bennett came off the bench to play just eight minutes in the game, but made the most of her playing time, scoring eight points on 4-5 (80%) shooting from the field.

Head Coach Tom Shirley's Lady Rams will regroup over the Christmas Holiday, and then will be back in action at the Gallagher Center next Saturday, December 29, 2007, as Philadelphia University hosts Kutztown University in a non-league affair.  Tip-off time for the matcup with the the Golden Bears is 2:00 p.m.
