Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime at Wilmington University

Sophomore center Jessica Romano and senior forward Ashley
Webster registered double-doubles for Philadelphia University in
women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't
enough to prevent a 67-60 overtime setback at Wilmington
University. The loss ends a three-game winning streak for the
Lady Rams, who fall to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) while the host Wildcats improve to
13-7 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Romano led the Lady Rams with 18 points to go along with 12
rebounds while Webster finished with 14 points and 15 boards for
her team-high 11th double-double of the season. Freshman
Taylor Magnus came off the bench to add 15 points for the Lady
Rams, narrowly missing her career-high of 16 points set earlier
this season. Senior guard Sherrelle Holmes and junior guard
Jamie Gallagher led Wilmington with 15 points apiece.
Philadelphia University put together the first serious run of the
game and led 19-11 with 6:16 left in the opening frame following a
Magnus jumper. The Wildcats closed the gap to 19-16 on
a three-point play by junior forward Jillian Bennett with 2:21
remaining, but Head Coach Tom Shirley's Lady Rams closed the
opening 20 minutes with a 5-2 run and settled for a 24-18 margin at
the half.
In the second half, the Wildcats scored the first seven points to
take the lead and for the time being, neither team could seize
control. However, with the contest tied at 35-35, the Lady
Rams went on a 12-0 run and looked to be in control, 47-35, with
6:42 left in regulation. The run was highlighted by Magnus,
who hit back-to-back three-point field goals and scored eight of
her team's 12 points. Wilmington responded with an 11-0 run
of its own and the teams ultimately found themselves tied at 51-51
after regulation. In overtime, the teams remained deadlocked,
this time at 58-58 with 1:47 remaining, when Gallagher connected on
her fifth three-pointer of the game to give the Wildcats the lead
for good. Sophomore forward Amelia Simmons cemented the win
for Wilmington with an offensive rebound and a putback with 32
seconds remaining and the Wildcats made four of five free throws
down the stretch to preserve the victory.
