Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University women's basketball squad (1-2, 0-0 CACC) was downed 81-59 in non-conference action vs. the Shippensburg University Lady Raiders (4-0, 0-0 PSAC) on Tuesday night. PhilaU junior center Jess Romano (Horsham, PA/ Hatboro-Horsham) had a team-high 18 points and nine boards, while SU's Kasey Gardner led all scorers with 27 points.
The Lady Rams charged out of the gates on an 11-0 run to start off the first half as senior forward Amanda Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling) sunk two free-throws to give PhilaU their biggest lead of the contest. Brennan finished the night with 10 points.
PhilaU's had a solid first half, shooting 50% from beyond the arc and 100% from the free-throw line. The Lady Rams led 35-31 at the half as they forced 11 Lady Raider turnovers.
The second half was a different story as the Lady Raiders opened with a 10-1 run, capped by a layup from Gardner who tied it 36-36 just three minutes into play. SU held PhilaU to just two points in the first six minutes of the second stanza, as the Lady Rams shot just 25% from the floor.
A bright spot for the Lady Rams was sophomore guard Stephanie Agger (N. Cape May, NJ/ Lower Cape May) who scored all 12 of her points in the second half.
SU went on to shoot 52% from the floor in the second half and 93% from the free throw line. The Lady Raiders scored 20 points in the paint to pull ahead and never look back- taking the 81-59 victory.
PhilaU junior guard Nina Brascetta (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) added 10 points and two steals for PhilaU.
The Lady Rams return to action at Concordia College on Monday, (12/1) at 5:00 p.m.
