Lions Prove Too Tough For Lady Rams in 61-55 Loss to Georgian Court
Philadelphia, PA- Junior center Jess Romano (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and senior guard Amanda Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling) both led all scorers with 21 points, but it would not be enough as the Philadelphia University Lady Rams (4-4, 1-1 CACC) fell 61-55 to the Georgian Court University Lions (3-7, 1-2 CACC) on Thursday night at the Gallagher Athletic Center.
The Lady Rams led by as many as seven points in the first half, but the Lions pulled ahead 34-32 at the half and would not look back.
Brennan was a bright spot for PhilaU- going 7-10 from beyond the arc.
GCU took an early first half lead, but the Lady Rams went on a 7-0 run to go up 14-13; their first lead of the game. Brennan went on to make three treys in a span of four minutes to nudge PhilaU ahead 25-18.
Romano rolled in a layup to tie it 32-32, but a jumper by GCU's leading scorer Dee Varley (16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) gave the Lions a 34-32 edge at the break.
The Lions turned the ball over 20 times, but made up for it shooting 49% from the floor and 82% at the free-throw line.
In the second half PhilaU sophomore forward Ashley Gaskins (Harrisburg, PA/ Central Dauphin) tied it 34-34, but a 6-0 GCU run gave the Lions some room to breath. Gaskins finished the night with six points and three rebounds.
The Lady Rams, who shot just 44% from the free-throw line for the night, were held scoreless for nearly five minutes until Romano hit a layup at 6:47.
At the 2:57 mark, PhilaU clawed their way back within two, but poor free-throw shooting continued to plague the Lady Rams and the Lions went 4-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to hold on for a 61-55 victory.
Next for the Lady Rams will be a non-conference away contest on Saturday, December 20th at Kutztown at 1:00 p.m.
