PhilaU Women Advance to CACC Championship in 76-63 Win
Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University women's basketball team (20-9, 13-5 CACC) advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship game with a 76-63 performance over the Bloomfield College Lady Deacons (14-5, 10-7 CACC) in the semifinal match-up on Friday afternoon.
The win marked the second time in three years of CACC post-season eligibility that the PhilaU squad has advanced to the CACC finale. The last time was in 2006-07, when the Lady Rams fell to Holy Family University 68-44.
In today's win, the Lady Rams were led by junior center Jess Romano's (Horsham, PA/ Hatboro-Horsham) 23 points-17 in the second half alone, and seven rebounds.
PhilaU trailed just once and built their lead up to 16 (30-14) in the first half, on a layup by junior forward Kate Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling). K. Brennan had 14 points and six rebounds in the contest.
The Lady Deacons responded with a 13-2 run to close out the second half, cutting the PhilaU lead 32-29 on a Milani Malik trey to go into halftime.
PhilaU senior guard Amanda Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling) roared into the second half with a three-ball just 20 seconds in, and would score 17 of her 21 points in the second stanza. BC cut the PhilaU tally to 35-33 on two Vanessa Lamison free throws, but that would be as close as the Lady Deacons would get.
The Lady Rams held a double-digit lead for the majority of the half as A. Brennan went 6-6 at the charity stripe down the stretch to clinch the victory for PhilaU.
PhilaU returns to action tomorrow, Saturday March 7th at 4 P.M. for the CACC Championship vs. Wilmington University- a 64-55 winner over Dominican.
