Brennan Trey Puts Nail in Bloomfields Coffin as PhilaU Wins 61-60
Philadelphia, PA- Philadelphia University (12-10, 10-4 CACC) saw veteran plays make the difference in a taut 61-60 win in a women's basketball contest over the visiting Bloomfield College Deacons (9-13, 9-6 CACC) on Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Athletic Center. Senior forward Kate Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling) hit a three with two minute remaining to put the Lady Rams ahead for good and senior center Jessica Romano (Horsham, PA/ Hatboro-Horsham) led all scorers with 23 points, added 10 boards and four swipes.
Both squads shot just 36% from field goal range, while PhilaU outshot the Deacons at the charity stripe (79%-44%).
The Deacons, led by Milani Malik's 12 points, dominated the first 15 minutes of play- jumping ahead by 11 at 10:24 (21-10). The Lady Rams heated up though, going on an 11-2 run to trail just 23-21 with less than five minutes in the half.
A jumper from PhilaU freshman forward Kristen Blye (Chester Springs, PA/ Downingtown East) pushed the Lady Rams ahead 30-29 at halftime. Blye finished with six points, six boards, and four assists/blocks/steals on the day.
In the second half, Romano chipped in a layup at 15:52 to give the home squad their largest lead of the contest (43-36) and senior guard Nina Brascetta (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Wood) knocked down a trey at 11:55 to keep the Lady Rams ahead. Brascetta chipped in eight points, seven assists, five boards and two steals in the game.
Brennan's three at 2:11 would be the last score of the game, as a three-point attempt from BC's Malik with five seconds was off the mark.
PhilaU returns to action on Tuesday (2/16) at the University of the Sciences at 6 p.m.
