PHILAU ENTERS CACC WOMENS LACROSSE TOURNAMENT AS #4 SEED
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 29, 2010) - The Georgian Court University women’s lacrosse team will serve as the top seed for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament, which the Lions will host on May 1 and 2 in Lakewood, N.J.. The Lions went undefeated in conference play (12-0) for the second straight season. Holy Family University claimed the No. 2 seed, Wilmington University is No. 3 and defending tournament champion, Philadelphia University, is No. 4.
Georgian Court claimed its second straight regular-season championship in dominating fashion, winning their games by an average margin of 12.75 goals per-game. Led by four senior first team All-Conference picks in Lauren Conaty, Natalie Bermudez, Christine Latteri and Algelica Gero, the Lions will battle for the CACC Championship on their home turf where they have gone undefeated this season (9-0). GCU went 15-2 overall and will be led by the 2010 CACC Coach of the Year, Mike Migliorisi. A total of nine Lions garnered All-CACC honors this season, which led the conference.
The Lions will face Philadelphia in Saturday’s semi-final round at 1:00 pm. GCU and Philadelphia met earlier this week, with Georgian Court taking a road victory by a score of 18-8. GCU also earned a 20-8 win against the Lady Rams on April 17. Saturday’s game will be a rematch of the 2009 CACC Championship, which Philadelphia won, 13-11, over the top-seeded Lions.
Philadelphia ended the season with a 6-6 conference record and 7-10 overall, but lost five consecutive contests to end the regular-season. They lost numerous nail-biters, including a 14-12 loss to Holy Family, a 10-8 loss to Chestnut Hill and a 13-12, overtime setback to Wilmington. Four Lady Rams earned All-Conference honors this season, including first team pick, senior midfielder Kathleen Maurer.
Holy Family and Wilmington will face off at 3:00 pm on Saturday. The Tigers and first-year head coach Sarah Lautenbach are making their first CACC Tournament appearance. Holy Family made a tremendous turnaround in its second season as a program in 2010. The Tigers went winless in 2009 in their first season of existence, finishing 0-10 in the CACC and 0-16 overall. This season, Holy Family won four of their last five games to qualify for the tournament, finishing 8-4 in conference play and 9-6 overall.
Wilmington went 10-7 this season and 7-5 in conference play. The Wildcats will be making their second straight CACC Tournament appearance. They lost to Georgian Court in last season’s semi-final round.
The last time Holy Family and Wilmington met was on April 6, with the Tigers winning a thrilling triple overtime affair, 14-13. Gina Mansi and Jennifer James both netted five goals for the Tigers, while Danielle Niccoli recorded two goals and two assists for Wilmington. Niccoli was recently voted the CACC Player of the Year. Two other Wildcats were named to the All-Conference first team in sophomore defenders Klaudia Furman and Kory Webster.
Holy Family’s Stephanie McNesby was honored as the 2010 CACC Rookie of the Year.
The winners of the two semi-final match-ups will play for the championship on Sunday, May 2 at 1pm at Georgian Court.
