PhilaU Chosen 4th in CACC Women's Lax Preseason Poll

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 24, 2011) – Georgian Court University has been chosen first in the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's lacrosse pre-season poll, which was voted upon by the seven head coaches. The Lions claimed their first CACC Tournament Championship last season and finished the year 17-2 overall and a perfect 12-0 in conference play. GCU picked up six of the seven first-place votes. Wilmington University and Holy Family University tied for second in the voting with 36 points apiece.

Georgian Court will commence the 2011 campaign with a different look as Jackie McGarrigle begins her first season as head coach. The GCU roster will experience a facelift, as 17 players from last year's championship team will not be returning. Key returnees include first-team All-CACC members Lauren Conaty (Sr.) and Ryan McGrath (Sr.). Conaty led Georgian Court with 46 goals a year ago while McGrath topped her teammates with 67 points and 23 assists. She also netted 44 goals. Other returning impact players are seniors Daryl Carr (All-CACC second team), Alley Abbate (All-CACC honorable mention) and Jillian Hadfield (20 goals, 16 assists).

Holy Family was picked first on one ballot after advancing to the CACC Tournament Championship game last season, a year after going winless in the program's first season of existence in 2009. The Tigers welcome back the 2010 CACC Rookie of the Year, Stephanie McNesby, who was also a second team All-Conference selection. McNesby tallied 31 goals and eight assists in leading the team to a 10-7 overall record (8-4 CACC). Also back is junior goalie Melissa Jenkins, who was an All-CACC honorable mention selection, and Jennifer James, who led the team in points (58) and goals (52).

Wilmington went 10-8 last season and 7-5 in conference play. The Wildcats will be led by the 2010 CACC Player of the Year, Danielle Niccoli (43 goals and 27 assists), who returns for her senior season. Also back is first team All-Conference player, Kory Webster, who tallied 18 goals and 10 assists last season, and Jess Grabeal (27 goals, 16 assists) who claimed second team All-CACC honors in 2010. Wilmington fell to Holy Family, 12-9, in the semi-finals of the conference tournament last season.

The 2011 season starts on March 2 with Georgian Court and Post in action. The conference slate will commence on March 13 when Philadelphia visits Post. The 2011 CACC Tournament will be hosted at Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J., for the third straight season, on April 30 and May 1.
