NEW CASTLE, Del. – Junior midfielder Libby Nichols (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and freshman attack Liz Mower (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) both scored five times to help the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team knock off Wilmington (Del.), 14-9, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Wednesday afternoon.
Philadelphia improves to 7-4 overall and remains perfect in CACC play with a 5-0 record. Wilmington (Del.) is now 0-10 overall and 0-4 against the conference.
Aside her five goals, Nichols added five ground balls, five draw controls, four caused turnovers, and one assist. Mower contributed two assists, three ground balls, and one draw control.
Sophomore attack Allison Brian (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored twice, while junior midfielder Carli DiCioccio (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington) and sophomore attack Elizabeth Marrosu (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) added one goal.
Rebekah McCurry recorded a hat-trick for the Wildcats. Megan Keffer and Jessica Stratton found the back of the net twice.
Philadelphia's freshman goalkeeper Felicia Branagan (Millville, N.J./Millville) made seven saves in the win. Wilmington's Kaitlyn Hall stopped 12 shots. The Rams owned a 30-19 shot advantage.
After trading goals to open the match, Nichols and Mower scored twice during a string of five consecutive Philadelphia goals that opened up 6-1 lead with 5:49 left in the first half.
Marrosu netted the final goal of the first half and DiCioccio and Nichols scored the first two second half goals to extend the gap to 9-3 at the 25:15 mark.
McCurry got two goals back to pull the Wildcats within 9-5. The two teams alternated goals over the final 18:14.
