Women’s lacrosse falls to No. 2 Adelphi 20-4 in season opener

PHILADELPHIA – Junior attack Allison Brian (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored a pair of goals as the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team opened its 2014 season with a 20-4 non-conference loss to No. 2 Adelphi  Saturday afternoon at Penn Charter High School.

Senior midfielder Libby Nichols (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh) contributed one goal, one assist, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Senior attack Emily Ray (Bedminister, N.J./Bernards) added a goal.

Alexa Froccaro paced the Panthers (3-0) with a game-high eight points (three goals, five assists). Devan Crimi tallied four goals and three assists. Kate Beier scored a game-high five goals and dished out one assist.

Felicia Mills had a game-high 11 draw controls.

Junior Kristen Moran (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) recorded 12 saves for the Rams in the opening 53:43. Freshman Maria Matteis (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) made two saves over the final 6:17.

Taylor Hayes posted eight saves in the win for Adelphi.

Nichols scored the Rams' first goal of the year with 17:14 left in the first half to cut Philadelphia's deficit to 5-1. After the Panthers rattled off four straight goals, three from Beier, Brian found the back of the net at the 4:21 mark to make a 9-2 game.

Brian struck again 7:48 into the second half to bring the Rams within 12-3. With 13:32 left in the contest, Ray netted her first goal of the season.

Philadelphia travels to Chestnut Hill to open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
