Varsity 8 takes third in heat at NCAA Division II Women's Rowing Championship

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Philadelphia University women's rowing varsity 8 team opened its NCAA Division II Championship with a third-place finish in its heat race on Friday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The team of coxswain Lynn Nemeth, bow Maria Soledad Gonzalez-Romero, Kelsey Fairley, Eliza Brooks, Amy Robinson, Rachael Tobinus, Julia Higham, Kelsey Zuch, and stroke Colleen O'Donnell rowed the "Who's Yo Daddy II" down the Lake Natoma 2-kilometer course in 7:19.678.

The result means that the Rams will compete in the repechage race on Saturday, May 30 at 1:30 p.m.

Barry recorded a wire-to-wire heat victory with a time of 6:55.295 and advances to Sunday's grand final. Central Oklahoma had the second-place time of 7:15.631.

In the second heat, Mercyhurst earned the win (6:58.272), while Humboldt State (7:01.818) and Nova Southeastern (7:28.908) were second and third, respectively.

Philadelphia will occupy lane three in the repechage race and will be joined by Central Oklahoma, Humboldt State, and Nova Southeastern. The top two teams will qualify for the grand final, while the last two teams go to the petit final.
