PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's rowing team kicked off the spring season at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.
The varsity eight boat carried the day for the Rams, posting a runner-up finish in the DII/DIII grand final.
The team started the day edging out Bryn Mawr College by 0.14 seconds to claim victory in its heat race. Philadelphia posted a time of 7 minutes, 04.31 seconds to record the fastest time out of all 13 boats in the heats.
In the grand final, Philadelphia improved its time from the heat races by over 10 seconds, but finished in second place behind Washington College. Philadelphia put up a 6:53.67, while Washington College had the winning time of 6:49.38.
The varsity four team started its spring with a fourth-place finish in heat three, which featured Boston College, Fordham, and Delaware. The Rams had a time of 8:02.49.
In the novice four race, Philadelphia squared off with St. Joseph's, Penn State, Villanova, and La Salle. The Rams' time of 8:30.21, placing them third in the heat before St. Joseph's and Penn State.
Philadelphia heads to Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa. for a race against Lafayette and Lehigh on Saturday, April 1.
