ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Midfielder Alexa Karakitsios (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) scored her first collegiate goal on an 81st-minute free kick to lift the Philadelphia University women's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference road victory against Molloy Tuesday afternoon.
Karakitsios took the free kick from just outside the penalty area, and drove her ball past the wall of Molloy defender into the upper right corner of the net to put Philadelphia in front. The free kick was Philadelphia's third and final shot of the contest.
The Rams (2-3-1) fell behind 1-0 on a 24th-minute own goal when Katie Neveil (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) attempted to pass the ball back to keeper Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood). The pass ended up being too wide for Messner to track down and ended up in the back of the Philadelphia net.
Neveil atoned for the miscue in the 43rd minute as she found an open Marisa Morazes (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Lawx), who did the rest as she beat Molloy keeper Brianna Wilson at the right post to even the score at one. The goal was Morazes' first in her career.
Messner played well in the Philadelphia net, stopping all five shots that Molloy got on target—including one by Samantha Mendes that came with two seconds left in regulation. Wilson finished with one save for Molloy (1-4-1)—who owned an 11-3 shot advantage.
Philadelphia returns home to face Felician in a Homecoming Day Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday, Sept. 24 at noon.
