Philadelphia University Hosts CACC Women's Tennis Team Championships

This Friday and Saturday, October 12th and 13th, Philadelphia
University hosts the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)
women's tennis team championships. The four-team tournament
takes place on the Main Campus Courts beginning at 10:00 a.m. on
Friday, as second-seeded Philadelphia
University takes on the three seed, University of the
Sciences in Philadelphia in the first semifinal.
Just last Saturday, the Lady Rams defeated the Devils by a count of
8-1.
In the second semifinal on Friday at 2:00 p.m., top-seeded
Holy Family
University battles fourth-seeded Georgian Court
University. On September 20th, en route to their
undefeated conference campaign, the Tigers defeated the Lions by a
9-0 margin. Friday's winners will advance to Saturday's
final, which begins at 12 noon, also on the Main Campus
Courts. In the event of rain either day, any postponed
matches will take place on Sunday, October 14th.
There will no shortage of court talent on display in the
tournament-all four teams feature players that have been honored by
the CACC throughout the regular season for their
accomplishments. For the Tigers of Holy Family, senior
Lauren Neill earned Player of the Week honors on
Sept. 10th, while senior Maddie
Smith of the Lady Rams was Player of the Week on both
Sept. 4th and Oct. 8th. Smith also shared Co-Player of the
Week recognition on Sept. 17th with USP senior Amanda
Bedway. Senior Katie
Stracquatanio of Philadelphia University battled back
from an early-season injury to earn Player of the Week for Oct.
1st.
The CACC Rookie of the Week category was also dominated by players
competing for the team championship this weekend. Lady Rams'
freshman Adriana Rodriguez (shown below) was a
three-time winner this season (Sept. 17th, Sept. 24th and Oct.
8th), while Georgian Court sophomore Nikki
Schlegel and USP freshman Zahra Hasan
took Rookie of the Week accolades on Sept. 4th and Sept. 10th
respectively.
Philadelphia University Athletic Director Tom
Shirley, who also serves as CACC President as well as
Executive Committee Sport Supervisor for women's tennis, expressed
satisfaction over the University's role as host institution, "It's
a great opportunity for us to provide the site for the CACC women's
tennis team championships. This is our third year in the
league, the second year we've been eligible for postseason play and
the first time we've hosted a CACC conference championship.
That makes it a very special occasion for Philadelphia University
athletics. Our Main Campus Courts provide a park-like outdoor
setting that has some great spots for the supporters from each team
to view the matches. Moreover, our indoor facilities such as
the Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center and the
Kanbar Campus Center offer all the modern conveniences and
amenities that the players, coaches and spectators will require
before, during and after the on-court play. I'm also proud
that the top three seeded teams are all Philadelphia-based
institutions, so the fact that they don't have to travel far for
the conference tournament is a just reward for their top-notch
seasons."
The stage has now been set, and the matches commence on Friday,
with the winning team earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division
II Women's Tennis Championships. The NCAA Tournament is set
for May 14-17, 2008 as part of the 2008 Division II National
Championship Festival at Memorial Park in Houston, during which
Division II champions will be crowned in men's and women's golf,
men's and women's tennis, women's lacrosse and softball.
