Smith Wins Player of the Year; Other Rams Honored

Philadelphia University senior Maddie Smith capped her record-setting career in style at the 2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Individual Tennis Tournament at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School on Friday and Saturday, October 19th and 20th.  Smith captured the doubles championship with freshman teammate Adriana Rodriguez Saturday morning, and then closed a remarkable day by winning the singles championship over Goldey-Beacom freshman Luisiana Souto.  For her efforts throughout an outstanding season, CACC Commissioner Dan Mara presented Smith with the CACC Player of the Year award (shown below), while Souto earned the Rookie of the Year honors.

Smith and Rodriguez, the top seed in doubles, advanced to the championship by defeating Lady Rams' teammates, freshman Daniela Rodriguez and senior Katie Stracquatanio, by a score of 8-1 in the semifinals.  In the championship match, Smith and Rodriguez upended the Holy Family tandem of senior Lauren Neill and junior Quena Borres, 8-4.

Smith, the top seed, had little trouble in capturing the singles championship.  She won her first-round match over Georgian Court's Autumn Florez, 10-2, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sarah Leonard from University of the Sciences.  In the semifinals, Smith faced teammate Daniela Rodriguez, and won by a 6-1, 6-3 count, setting set up the final against Souto, which Smith won, 6-1, 6-3.

In addition to Maddie Smith being named player of the year, two of her freshman teammates also garnered All-CACC accolades, namely Adriana and Daniela Rodriguez.  In the eight-week span of the conference season, Smith was named Player of the Week three times outright, and once shared Co-Player of the Week recognition with fellow All-Conference selection Amanda Bedway from University of the Sciences.  Adriana Rodriguez was named CACC Rookie of the Week four times in the two months of league play.

Smith can still play matches in the abbreviated 2008 spring women's season for Head Coach Marty Gilbert's Lady Rams, but for now stands alone atop the Philadelphia University all-time lists for career singles (67), doubles (68) and combined (135) wins.  She also holds the school's single-season records for singles wins (24) and combined victories (39), both coming in 2006-'07.
